SpeechTek 2006

The annual conference and trade show dedicated to speech products, applications and solutions was in NYC from August 7-10, 2006. Although this writer only had a chance to briefly attend the show this year, it is a terrific show with plenty of choices of presentations plus an Exhibit floor. There were tools workshops, vertical market workshops, company workshops, advanced speech technology forums, Birds of a Feather sessions, SpeechTek University and more. The only negative is that you have to pick from among the many choices at any given time slot, and there really is no chance to catch something that conflicted if you really wanted to attend more than one that was scheduled at the same time because none of the sessions are repeated. So, for example, if you were interested in attending a session on Advanced Techniques for Improving User Interaction, and also a session called "Beyond VoiceXML: Metalanguages and More!, and also a session on VoIP and Speech, and also a session on Voice Coaching, (and many other choices), you couldn't because they were all happening at the same time.

This writer had the chance to attend the SpeechTek University session on Voice Coaching, presented by Lizanne Kaiser, Sr. Principal Consultant at Genesys Telecommunications, and Marcus Graham, CEO of GM Voices, Inc. It was an enlightening and informative session, showing all of the work that goes on in order to get voice recordings just right, to convey the message a business wants to convey, in the manner it wants to convey it. Apparently there is much more to it than just picking anyone to read a script and record it.

If you missed SpeechTek 2006 in NYC, it seems to come around every August, so you wi’ll have a chance again next year. There is also one in San Francisco next February, but from some comments this writer overheard, the NYC event is the better event.
