This worked practically out of the box. Like every media player on the market, I first had to charge up the battery. Very simple. Connect the unit to the supplied usb cord and connect the usb cord to the pc. K-PEX is compatible with PCs running Windows 2000 or XP (SP1 and above). I followed instructions on the screen to charge the unit (3 hours for a full charge). Note that the pc immediately recognized the unit, and also noted that it was also 1GB flash drive.

Came back in 3 hours and the unit was charged.

Safely disconnected/reconnected the unit to the pc. Opened windows explorer and simply dragged and dropped music collections (chose WMA files) from the hard drive to the Music folder on the K-PEX. The K-PEX will play MP3, WAV, WMA, Ogg(Q10), and Audio ASF.

Safely disconnected the K-PEX from the pc.

Plugged in the supplied headphones and turned on the unit. Pressed the Menu button and navigated to the Music. Pressed the Select button and got the list of folders I'd created. Selected the folder with the music I wanted to hear and pressed play. It worked, and sounded great.

The website says that the unit also plays:
Videos: MPX format, requires transcoder software to play WMV, ASF,MPEG 1 & 2 and AVI formats
Photo: Compatible with JPEG picture files
Haven't checked those options out yet.

The K-PEX is also an FM Radio! Just select Menu and navigate until you see FM Radio. Then just tune in your station and listen. I did. Sounded great.

The K-PEX is also a recorder. I created a couple of quick voice recordings that came out crisp and loud and clear. Will have to load up the CD with the user manual to figure out how to erase them. The K-PEX also has a line-in to record from other sources, and even has a connector so you can transfer your songs or videos or whatever from other USB sources, such as a thumb drive or even an iPod.

And if 1GB isn't sufficient space, there is also a slot for a miniSD disk.

This media player seems to have it all. It's much more versatile than an iPod. It support more media types and comes with many extra included options.

I recommend putting it on your gift list, for yourself and others.
