The Daylight Saving Time (DST) Change

If you are a corporation with lots of computers, hopefully you have already addressed this matter and secured and rolled out the appropriate patches. This article is for those with individual computers or other equipment that will be affected by the new "spring forward" date of March 11, 2007 at 2am.

If you are running Windows Vista or Windows XP SP2 and have automatic updates turned on, supposedly the patch has already been applied. If you don't have automatic updates turned on, you need to go to the Microsoft website downloads section and download the patch.

If you have older versions, the following link might make your life simpler than trying to follow the complex instructions from Microsoft for those older versions:

(scroll down to the Freeware section and find your windows version and click on the appropriate link.)

If you have Apple computers, the patches can be found on the Apple website.

Too bad I can't do that for my VCRs. Since my cable company requires a cable box, the new feature on some VCRs to change automatically based on a signal does not work. So for those of you who have VCRs that are in this state, turn off the Daylight Saving Time (DST) feature and change them manually after 2am Sunday morning. And if your cable company has the same problem as Time Warner does here in NYC, then you will also have to reprogram all of your program record settings, as I have to do every time the clocks get changed. It's a lot of work and very frustrating. When I have told them about it they acted like they had no clue that it happens every time the clocks change. Ugh!

Well, at least we'll have longer days and more daylight. That should, um, brighten things up a bit :)
